Ann-Marie Atkins, known as The Saxy Lady, is a born musician! From an early age, she learned the recorder at school and then went onto the clarinet and saxophone. From there it was taken seriously, subsequently leading to studying jazz at the City of Leeds College of Music, and obtaining a teaching degree. i Ann-Marie mainly plays straight ahead jazz on the tenor saxophone but also plays the alto and soprano, mainly for funk and soul and acoustic gigs. At college she also studied the flute as a subsidiary instrument and took piano lessons. She also runs and manages her own bands, Brassbound, a funky, jazzy brass and wind street band for which she plays the sousapghone, and Silverrock, a reggae band for which she plays either the saxophone or the keyboard. Ann-marie also does session work and recordings and really enjoys writing horn lines for songs. But her first love is playing live and, as well as playing with bands, she does lots of solo performances to backing tracks or alongside a DJ or percussionist.
